The Replacements: Why Keanu Reeves' Football Movie Still Wins
The story takes place during a professional football players' strike. With the playoffs approaching, the fictional Washington Sentinels suddenly need an entire team of replacement players. Team owner Edward O'Neil turns to former coach Jimmy McGinty, played by Gene Hackman. McGinty agrees—but only if he gets to choose his own players. At the top of his list is Shane Falco, played by Keanu Reeves. Falco was once a promising quarterback, but after a disastrous college performance, his football career fell apart. By the time McGinty finds him, he's scraping barnacles off boats. But McGinty sees something in Falco that Falco doesn't necessarily see in himself. So begins one of the strangest recruiting drives in movie history.
