The Abyss: How They Filmed the Impossible in 1989
Released in August 1989, The Abyss is a science-fiction adventure, survival thriller, Cold War drama, and bruised love story all at once. James Cameron wrote and directed it, with Gale Anne Hurd producing, Mikael Salomon handling cinematography, and Alan Silvestri composing the score.
The story begins when the U.S. nuclear submarine Montana mysteriously sinks near the Cayman Trough. With a hurricane closing in and Soviet ships moving toward the wreck, the Navy sends a SEAL team to Deep Core, an experimental underwater oil-drilling platform. The civilian crew is led by Virgil “Bud” Brigman, played by Ed Harris. The platform’s designer—and Bud’s estranged wife—Dr. Lindsey Brigman, played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, arrives with the military team.
The mission appears to be a dangerous salvage operation. Then Lindsey sees a strange light moving beneath the water. As the storm cuts Deep Core off from the surface and SEAL commander Hiram Coffey begins to unravel under pressure, the crew realizes the ocean may contain an intelligence that has been watching humanity very closely.
